What do I wear?
Swing dancing can be fun, silly, elegant, subtle, over-the-top, inspiring and above all, PHYSICAL! You can wear whatever makes you happy, but here are some guidelines to help you know what to expect. Most dancers will wear casual, comfortable clothes to classes, dressing in layers so that they can cool off as they warm up. Bring an extra shirt or 5 if you sweat a lot!
Same goes for social dancing. No one likes running their hand across someone else's sweaty back, so be good to yourself and your partners: bring extra shirts and wear anti-perspirant or deodorant! When going out for a social dance, like at Hot Jam, GA Tech, Emory or Agnes Scott, dancers like to wear anything from casual street clothes to getting dolled up in vintage or vintage-inspired duds. Try not to wear things that will constrict your movement, since you'll want to be able to move with ease.
Shoes also run the gamut, but most dancers will eventually invest in a pair of real dance shoes. Some like shoes like Keds, that have been fitted with special soles, called "chrome leather." You can get shoes resoled with this special material (a kind of suede) at the shoe repair shop in Lenox, or at the shoe repair shop in Toco Hills. There are others, but not all shoe repair shops do this type of work. You can also get some pretty sweet kicks at danceshoesstore.com, dancestore.com, saintsavoy.com and more. Once you're ready, just ask a dancer who's shoes you love, and they'll tell you where they got theirs!
